City Hall Tours

The new City Hall is a model green building that has been gold certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. Not only does it exemplify the City’s commitment to create a healthy natural environment and a sustainable community for Shoreline residents and businesses, but it models energy efficient solar and thermal panels, a green roof, electric car charging stations, native plant landscaping, maximized natural lighting, furniture made from recycled products, and green cleaning products, among others. Low Impact Development (LID)

A rain garden is a shallow depression that uses soils and plants to manage runoff form impervious areas such as the home roof or driveway. The plants and compost-amended soil can hold several inches of rainwater and allow the stormwater to slowly seep into the ground.

The Environmental Protection Agency describes LID to be an approach to land development (or redevelopment) that works with nature to manage stormwater as close to its source as possible. LID employs principles such as preserving and recreating natural landscape features minimizing effective imperviousness to create functional and appealing site drainage that treat stormwater as a resource rather than a waste product. There are many practices that have been used to adhere to these principles such as:

  • Bioretention facilities
  • Rain gardens
  • Vegetated rooftops
  • Permeable pavements
