Matching Scottish Potential with European Opportunities

SEGEC was established in 2009 in recognition of the economic, social and environmental opportunities offered by the low-carbon energy sector. Our mission is to help Scotland exploit its significant potential in this sector by encouraging stronger engagement at a European and international level and by facilitating access to EU funding, which can be critical to the success of demonstration and deployment projects. We help Scottish organisations develop projects and access funding to help overcome the barriers to wider adoption of low-carbon energy.

SEGEC was supported by the Scottish Government, the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Scottish Enterprise, Highlands & Islands Enterprise (HIE), ScottishPower and SSE. Our ERDF funding was for 4 years, and in that time we facilitated over €150M of funding and investment for Scottish low-carbon demonstration and deployment projects. The team has supported real success for Scotland in the development of the low-carbon sector, which would not have happened otherwise.

On July 1st 2013, the key functions of SEGEC transferred into Scottish Enterprise. This move will support the continued and future success for the team and its engagement in Europe. It also allows Scottish Enterprise to offer a much more comprehensive range of support mechanisms to companies and projects in Scotland.

But critics of the study say it doesn't translate to the U.S. economy and that the dire predictions are overblown.
"A lot of critics have missed the point, acting as if this was sort of all public investments to create government jobs," said Bracken Hendricks, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, who is an expert on environmental issues.
"Nothing could be further from the truth. This is about the private sector, it's about innovating in business and it's about putting the economy back to work."
